The Best of the Engadine and St. Moritz

When we consider hiking in Switzerland, the Engadine and St. Moritz region holds a special place in the hearts of passionate Alps hikers. Its rugged ridges, glacial bowls, and radiating valleys are more quiet and remote than those in other parts of the Swiss Alps. For most outsiders, it’s an undiscovered gem with an irresistible local culture drawing on Romansch roots and Italian influences.

Bernina Alps

The great Switzerland hikes and mountaintop excursions included in Alpenwild’s Best of the Engadine & St. Moritz tour are centered in the Bernina Alps which boasts an abundance of glaciers and many of the highest peaks in the Alps. Piz Bernina is the most easterly 4000-meter peak in the Alps, and you’ll be able to discover and explore some of the glaciers which flank this Alpine giant and its surrounding peaks. The peaks and glaciers of the Bernina Alps rise above the deep-cut valleys of the Upper Engadine and villages like Pontresina, St Moritz, Zuoz, Zernez, and Sils Maria. You’ll also enjoy our crossing of the Bernina Pass and descending into Val Poschiavo, one of the Italian-speaking regions in the Swiss Alps.

Alpenwild guests say that one of the features they enjoy most about this tour is that you aren’t unpacking and packing day after day. The tour stays six days at the foot of the Bernina Alps in the centrally located resort town of Pontresina, so you can settle in and better connect with the scenic beauty and culture of the region. All of the tour’s hiking and excursions are within the Swiss canton of Graubünden (Grisons in French), the largest and easternmost of Switzerland’s 26 cantons. Pontresina is known as a haven for hikers, but it’s also home to one of the largest ibex colonies in the Alps. Some hikes and outings included in this tour begin just a short walk from your hotel. And the Bernina Express line train station is nearby for easy access to hikes over the Bernina Pass and throughout the region.   

You’ll discover an overwhelming diversity of culture, scenery, geology, and flora. You’ll get to know the Swiss Alps in a way few travelers will ever experience. You’ll come to love the traditional whitewashed homes and buildings in the Engadine Valley which are decorated with sgraffito plasterwork. The Engadine is a trove of hidden treasures and new surprises, even for experienced Alps hikers.
